Shirtless Male Celebrities on the Big Screen - A Hollywood Enterprise

What do 300 and Troy have in common? Aside from being considered as two of the most buzz-worthy historical/epic films that showcase the best choreographed fight scenes in the history of the big screen, these movies showcase the most profitable trump card that a film could ever use to monopolize colossal viewership and box office success---featuring shirtless male celebrities on screen.

enterprise rental car

This proved to be a good move for these films considering the millions of dollars they earned during the first few weeks of release. But then again, these films don't just boast of godly movie star bodies and bare chests. 300 and Troy are movies that really required the actors to act, train and be in the moment of being a thespian during the whole movie. Moreover, showing off their ripped muscles and abs are a necessity to make the films realistic.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

In the recent years, the trend of including shirtless male celebrities in movie scenes has been used by producers and directors to make a movie sell. Consider it as a technique to populate movie houses with female hormones. For some, it might be considered as perfectly fine, but when searching for the necessity for these scenes come into question, can producers and directors actually answer for them?

Some Hollywood film producers and moviemakers are guilty of using sex as a means to entice viewers to watch a film, and if sales and box office records are concerned, this technique is surely working to their advantage. After all, in this day and age, sex sells in real or reel life.

In a way, this can be said to be an objectification of the male form. Although, the society might believe that only the female form is a target of objectification, the reality of 21st century Hollywood has extended that construct. Depending on how far the moviemakers are willing to go to in terms of obscenity, the sphere by which objectification of Hollywood male celebrities could go further.

This phenomenon is not only limited to the big screen. TV shows have been doing such for so long. Now, TV shows like Gossip Girl are already capitalizing on their bare-chested male mainstay in the show to increase ratings. If a smart viewer watches such shows and ask for the need to showcase shirtless male celebrities on the said scene, could TV producers give a logical reply?

The reality in all these is simple: Anyone would want to see what's hidden and everyone wants to have a taste of what's taboo. Nudity, full or partial is no different. Whether it is the teen idol, Zac Efron, or the film hotshot, Brad Pitt, fans are willing to cough off money for movie tickets and more so if that meant seeing these stars partially naked even only on screen.

Are producers, fans, and directors already objectifying their male stars? The answer depends really on how the boundaries between Hollywood capitalism and artistry are defined.

Rental Car History

Whether you've traveled to an unfamiliar place or just needed a replacement while your car's in the shop, chances are you've had to rent a car at some point in your life. Rental cars have a long and storied history that's closely tied to the history of the automobile industry and America itself. As times have changed, so have rental cars - and they remain a crucial part of the automobile industry to this day.

enterprise rental car

The true beginnings of rental cars are unknown, but many believe that the first true rental car agency began with the Model T, the first mass-produced automobile. Allegedly, the first rental agency belonged to a Nebraskan man named Joe Saunders, who would rent his Model T out for ten cents a mile. Saunders used a mileage meter to determine how far his car had been driven. The legend goes that Saunders' first rental went to a traveling salesman who wanted to impress a girl on a date.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

Whatever the case, Saunders definitely had the first massively successful car-rental agency. By 1925, his business had rental agencies in 21 states. However, the Great Depression led to many people no longer needing rental cars, and Saunders went bankrupt.

While Saunders was establishing his business, a man named Walter Jacobs was also starting his own Model T rental service. Jacobs fared far better than Saunders. He eventually sold his business to Yellow Cab owner John Hertz. Hertz' company was then bought out by General Motors. Today, Hertz Rent a Car is the largest rental car company in the world.

Rental cars suffered from a bad reputation during the Prohibition period, as many believed they were used to transport criminals. After Prohibition was repealed, the rental car industry enjoyed a better reputation, and expanded considerably.

The industry grew even more after WWII, because the growing popularity of airlines for business travel meant that more people needed a car for their business trips. Hertz had predicted this trend by opening a rental facility at Chicago's Midway Airport in 1932. Avis is credited with being the first company to do airport-focused rentals as its main source of business. The company's founder, Warren Avis, was a former Army pilot, and focused almost all their business toward airports and the surrounding areas. Another successful company launched during this time was National Car Rental System, Inc., whose founders included Joe Saunders himself.

In the 1970s and 1980s, rental car companies began selling off their older vehicles, which led to companies such as Hertz also becoming major used-car dealers. At this point, major automobile manufacturing companies began buying up many used car companies in an effort to ensure that these companies would primarily buy their cars from them.

The rental car industry took a hit when air travel slowed down after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, but has made a tremendous comeback in recent years. The increasing amount of business done on the Internet means that it's now possible to book a rental car online, making it easier to rent a car than ever. As long as Americans need a car waiting for them...rental cars will be there.

When To Use Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms

With a number of emerging and competing standards for all the various mobile devices, it's tempting to look for a quick fix for your enterprise mobile needs. Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms (MEAPs) try to leverage established back-ends making them available to both iOS and Android (and theoretically, BlackBerry and WP7). This is a lofty goal and at some level MEAPs can be successful, but there are some important considerations while evaluating a MEAP-based solution.

enterprise rental car

Clearly define what you hope to accomplish with your mobile endeavor. If your goals require even a moderate amount of interaction between the device and the user, then a MEAP-based solution will probably fall short of user expectations. MEAPs have to function across multiple platforms with minor customization, and because of this "lowest common denominator" design requirement, the experience typically seems flat or cumbersome. A MEAP can't take advantage of architecture or conventions not common to all devices and it's those differences that attract people to iOS or Android or BlackBerry devices. Whether it's the full lexicon of gestures or some of the hardware advantages, none of these are available for a MEAP to use.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

Be care when investing in specialized development. MEAPs are often proprietary, and customizing and maintaining them can be a specialized skill. Organizations will either have to rely on the vendor for help or invest in teaching these skills to personnel. Adding a new technology to your stack (even one that is supposed save you some work) comes with long-term ramifications. If what you're trying to accomplish is core to your business, a MEAP-based solution might be too much of a risk.

HTML 5 is coming. Because HTML5 is a standard that every mobile device will eventually have to support, it could be considered a MEAP. It's an evolving standard and doesn't take advantage of mobile device native features, but it's not proprietary and HTML5 skills will be easier to find in the future. The question with HTML5 is "when?" When will the standard solidify enough for the open source community to build the tools and features to make HTML5 development more than a curiosity?

When should you use a mobile enterprise application platform? MEAPs can be a good fit when you're trying to produce a simple mobile content portal for end users. The focus should be a quick, cost-effective way to leverage documentation and media from a mobile device. Avoid customization and keep user interaction minimal. Utilize the strength of the chosen MEAP, but don't be overly ambitious. Realize that when you're ready to move into a more serious enterprise mobile solution, you'll probably have to start from scratch to get it right.

Star Trek Enterprise NCC-1701-D Warp Drive

Star Trek's warp drive is the single most complicated and powerful component of the USS Enterprise. It is the device that has allowed humanity to access deep space, making contact with alien lifeforms possible, and has changed nearly all technological civilizations in the Milky Way.

enterprise rental car

Warp drive allows space travel at faster-than-light speeds. This is accomplished by generating warp fields to form a subspace bubble that envelops the starship, distorting the local space time continuum and moving the starship at velocities that exceed the speed of light. These velocities are referred to as warp factors. Warp drive is the most common form of interstellar propulsion used in the Milky Way Galaxy, making interstellar civilization, trade and warfare possible.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

THEORY AND APPLICATION

Zefram Cochrane, the scientist credited with the creation of modern warp physics, built his work upon the shoulders of other giants. Beginning in the mid-twenty-first century, Cochrane, working with his team, derived the basic mechanism of continuum distortion propulsion (CDP). He was able to grasp the potential for higher energies and faster-than-light travel, which led to practical operations beyond the solar system. The ensuing promise of rapid interstellar travel saw his team take on the task of an intensive review of all of the physical sciences.

Their work led to a set of complex equations, materials formulation, and operational procedures that described the essential details of super luminal flight. In early warp drive theories, single or double shaped fields, created at tremendous energy output, could distort the space/time continuum enough to drive a starship. As early as 2061, Cochrane's team succeeded in producing a massive prototype field device. Described as a fluctuation superimpeller, it first allowed an unmanned flight test vehicle to straddle the speed of light (c) "wall," alternating between two velocity states while remaining at neither for longer than Planck time, 1.3 x 10~43 second, the smallest possible unit of measurable time. This had the net effect of maintaining velocities at the previously unattainable speed of light, while avoiding the theoretically infinite energy expenditure otherwise required.

Early CDP engines-which were informally dubbed "warp" engines - met with success, and were almost immediately incorporated into existing spacecraft designs with surprising ease. Though slow and inefficient by today's standards, these engines yielded a substantial reduction of time dilation effects, and paved the way for round-trip flights on the order of a few years instead of decades.

WARP MEASUREMENT

Warp drive velocity in Star Trek is generally expressed in "warp factor" units, which correspond to the magnitude of the warp field. Achieving warp factor 1 is equivalent to breaking the light barrier, while the actual velocity corresponding to higher factors is determined using an ambiguous formula.

Star Trek artist Michael Okuda devised a formula based on the original one but with important differences. For warp 1-9, s(w) = w^{10 \over 3}c. In the half-open interval from warp 9 to warp 10, the exponent of w increases toward infinity. At velocities greater than warp 9, the form of the warp function changes because of an increase in the exponent of the warp factor w. Due to the increase in the derivative, even a minor change in the warp factor corresponds to an exponentially larger change in velocity.

Cochrane units are used to measure subspace field stress. Cochranes are also used to measure field distortion generated by tractor beams, deflectors, and synthetic gravity fields. Millicochranes measure fields below Warp 1.

The amount of power required to maintain a given warp factor is a function of the cochrane value of the warp field. The energy required to establish the field is much greater, and is called the peak transitional threshold. Once that threshold has been crossed, the amount of power required to maintain a given warp factor declines. While the current engine designs allow for control of unprecedented amounts of energy, the warp driver coil electrodynamic efficiency decreases as the warp factor increases.

Warp fields exceeding a given warp factor, but lacking the energy to cross the threshold to the next higher level, are called fractional warp factors. Travel at a given fractional warp factor can be significantly faster than travel at the next lower integral warp, but for extended travel, it is often more energy efficient to simply increase to the next higher integral warp factor.

THEORETICAL LIMITS

Eugene's Limit allows for warp stress to increase asymptotically, approaching but never reaching a value corresponding to Warp Factor 10. As field values approach ten, power requirements rise geometrically, while the aforementioned driver coil efficiency drops dramatically. The required force coupling and decoupling of the warp field layers rise to unattainable frequencies, exceeding not only the flight system's control capabilities, but more important the limit imposed by Planck time. If it were possible to expend the theoretically infinite amount of energy required, an object at Warp 10 would be traveling infinitely fast and occupy all points in the universe simultaneously.

WARP PROPULSION SYSTEM

As installed in the Enterprise, the warp propulsion system consists of the matter/antimatter reaction assembly, power transfer conduits, and warp engine nacelles. The total system provides energy for its primary application, propelling the USS Enterprise through space, as well as its secondary application, powering the defensive shields, phaser arrays, tractor beam, main deflector, and computer cores.

The final propulsion system specifications required the Galaxy class Enterprise to sustain a cruising speed of Warp 6 until fuel is expended, a maximum cruising speed of Warp 9.2, and a maximum top speed of Warp 9.6 for twelve hours. The total estimated vehicle mass was reduced through materials improvements to 4.96 million metric tons.

Controlling Enterprise Mobility in the Cloud

According to a recent Gartner survey, as reported by InfoWorld, Cloud Computing was mentioned as one of the top two technology priorities for CIOs in 2010. What's also interesting is that on the Top 10 list is also security technologies.

enterprise hard drive

The concept of cloud computing is not new. The economic viability of this model is quite compelling for many enterprises, with the Gartner survey also mentioning cost reduction and improved workforce effectiveness as two of the top 10 CIO business priorities. However, concerns around security and relinquishing control over sensitive corporate data have been stalling the widespread adoption of cloud computing in the last couple of years. But, becoming clear is that the cloud computing era is approaching fast. And here's why.

ENTERPRISE

Past experience has taught us that economic viability is a strong driver for innovation, and that drive will prevail over technical challenges. One example is the shift from mainframe computing paradigm, which dominated the marketplace in the 80s, to the client-server paradigm, which prevailed in the 90s. The mainframe generation was characterized by silos of data and voice communications. In this generation, dumb terminals used to connect to proprietary mainframes for specific yet limited computing applications, with voice, video and data running on completely segregated networks. The mainframe paradigm was simple and secure, with enterprises being fully in control of access privileges to data and applications.

However, the economic benefits of unifying voice, video, and data applications on a single converged network became a stronger, more prevailing force. Continuing this example, the client-server paradigm galvanized the adoption of TCP/IP worldwide, which in turn spurred the development of the internet and unified communications.

These same concepts are applicable to the cloud computing industry. The economic viability of pay-as-you-go for virtually unlimited elastic computing resources, required for fast and efficient implementation of IT projects, will overcome the security concerns. The fact that existing cloud computing vendors are prospering and that major new players are entering the cloud computing market, is yet another indication that this industry is beginning to emerge successfully across the chasm.

This market growth is an indication that the adoption of the technology is shifting from the early adaptors, who are visionary in nature, to the pragmatic early majority. There is ample evidence that cloud computing is gaining momentum. Amazon is substantially growing their Elastic Compute Cloud and S3 services and a stock price appreciating over 175% from January 2009; Google Apps Engine is challenging the Microsoft domination of the office applications, and Salesforce-dot-com's stock price is appreciating over 180% in the last year, There are also new major players who are entering this market, including IBM with Blue Cloud and AT&T with Synaptic Hosting, and the expectation is that other major Service Providers will be adding cloud services to their portfolio in 2010.

Independent of whether your corporation is an early adaptor or an early majority company, if you will be adopting cloud computing technologies in the foreseeable future, then an interesting question to ponder would be: "How would the adoption of cloud computing and SaaS applications impact the enforcement of corporate security policies for mobile users?"

The traditional approach to enforcing corporate access security is to require mobile users accessing the corporate LAN to launch either SSL VPN or IPSec VPN clients. With these technologies, tunnels are established at the application or network layer respectively to ensure confidentiality of data traversing these VPNs. The challenge of this approach is that mobile workers who use their corporate remote access devices to access the internet either don't launch their VPN clients, or their sessions are routed directly to internet through a split tunnel connection provisioned on access routers.

When remote users are accessing the corporate LAN through VPN, they are protected by firewalls with UTM (Unified Threat Management) functionality. This is not the case, however, when the users connect directly to the Internet. In this case, they are exposed to a multitude of risks, including viruses, phishing, and spyware.

A practical example of this risk would be the following scenario. Consider that you are using your corporate laptop to log from your home into the Dolphin Stadium and the Miami Dolphins team website to purchase tickets for the 2010 Super Bowl football game. What you don't know is that this web site has been hacked into (based on a real scenario*), and it downloads and installs a malicious code on your laptop. This code acts as Trojan and can install a keylogger code and disable the anti-virus application on your laptop. After purchasing your tickets to the Super Bowl, you decide it's time to get some work done and log into your Google Apps. Unfortunately, your password to Google Apps is captured by the keylogger and compromised at that time. This scenario could have been avoided with a mobile connection manager blocking the remote access to Google Apps after detecting that the Antivirus application is disabled.

As the control point in the cloud computing era is shifting from VPN to internet connection, the connection manager will be required to enforce corporate policies for endpoint security. The recently announced iPass Open Mobile Platform has been designed with this paradigm shift in mind. The Open Mobile Client is always running on the mobile device, which enables it to become the ultimate control point for all mobility purposes, regardless of whether the accessed applications reside in the cloud or on the corporate LAN.

The client in most cases is transparent to the end users, enforcing policies in the background. Policies may include optimal network selection, launching and passing on user credentials to VPN clients, and performing end-point integrity checks and remediation. The ECA (Event Condition Action) functionality on the Open Mobile Client empowers IT administrators to enforce corporate endpoint security policies. ECA is used to enforce both pre- and post-connect policies and spans across all integrated technologies (e.g. VPNs) and application (e.g. UTM apps running on the mobile device).

Starbucks Merges With Blockbuster for Movie Cafes

I have been sitting on my hands and holding back my ideas because I thought someone from the new Blockbuster Corporation would have done something of value by now, but they haven't.

A few news items were the driving force that tipped off my thinking cap. The first piece of news was a rumor that Charlie Ergen, the new owner of Blockbuster and founder of Dish Networks, only bought Blockbuster for the monster Tax Credits that the US Government gives corporations when their company loses profits.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL COUPONS

The other action in the news was Blockbuster's move to engage a courtroom battle with NCR over vending machine sales. (NCR is a company that licenses the Blockbuster name for movie rental machines in grocery stores.) Rather than a smart business action, that was both the straw that broke the camel's back and my cue to hatch this business plan for Blockbuster or anyone else who can get a hold of one of their recently abandoned retail outlets. Luckily for Mr. Ergen, high profile corporate lawyers are cheap so they can do this legal fighting for decades over vending machine sales and get massive corporate tax cuts.

My answer to Blockbusters problems does not reside in the courtrooms but stems from BEANS - COFFEE BEANS, to be exact.

Blockbuster Video Stores have been woven into the fabric of Americana for a while, but now they have been dissolved by the Digital World. Blockbuster's big corporate money did not see the changes coming. Blockbuster never looked in the review mirror or outside of the box. Instead they made strong corporate alliances and paid top dollar to executives. Take, for example, John F Antioco, who was paid 51 million dollars in 2004 for his "leadership."

So as I move along with this story slash plan to help America create some new jobs, I cannot help but feel optimistic.

Real movie fans know that Blockbuster sold out the movie industry instead of nurturing the Film Industry. They pushed cheese movies down the throats of the public and showed no interest in Foreign or Independent films. Ever seen the Independent or Foreign Film section in Blockbuster? Exactly. That is like excluding Vincent Van Gogh just because he is not from Burbank Studios Corporate Office in California. True film directors, writers, and artists were never able to appreciate this company because of its lack of quality films. But let's not kick a dog when it's down.

My idea makes me feel like I am Richard Dreyfuss in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" looking for the mountain - except my mountain is the business plan for Blockbuster Cafes.

It is proven that you do not need massive retail space to earn profits in the movie or game rental market. Blockbuster stock is less than 3 cents a share and Netflix is selling over 0.00 a share. Bing! One has to appreciate the Netflix business model in this day and age.

Million dollar question: Can Blockbuster once again become a leader in the movie rental business?

Maybe - and here are my nine changes and the core of the plan:

1. First off, get rid of all the needle nose pencil pushers that do not understand Film. Train them to start appreciating quality Films from around the world. And if they do not want to change, then you have to show them the way. The motto under MGM's logo in Latin says, "Art for Arts Sake."

2. Transform all Blockbuster Video Stores by cutting the shelf space. What do you need shelf space for with the dust jackets? Have five computer terminals like the library does and let people browse reviews, celebrity movie pics, awards, suggestions, and so on. Sit down and make your DVD rental selection - very similar to Vending machine sales.

3. Next take all that open space in the store ( ) and put in lounge chairs, sofas, and decorative design. Make each Blockbuster look different and yet the same (will explain this later-do not want to give away too much of my interior design chops.)

4. Convert the checkout counter at Blockbuster into a coffee bar. Now we can jump into the game of selling high-end Specialty Coffee drinks. If it was up to me, I would forget Starbucks and just buy my own beans. Sell Blockbuster Coffee. The name even sounds great. Starbucks pays less than a penny for a pound of beans. What do they really have? Customer Service. Starbucks is not offering anything new, but they do offer awesome customer service. If Blockbuster Cafes can incorporate quality customer service, then there is no reason why it cannot sell its own coffee just as well as Starbucks.

5. After you rent the video at the computer station, the printer at the Coffee Bar counter shows your order number, name of movie, and customer's name. The barista walks to the back storage area and pulls out your DVD, Game, or Blue Ray from the shelf, hands it to you, and leaves you with a 'see you later,' a nice iced caramel latte in hand, and a few slices of banana bread.

6. Store hours are 7am till Midnight. (How many people do you think will have to be hired for these hours?)

7. Now the good news: Get rid of all that candy. What genius thought of this? I am a foodie and to see the junk that Blockbuster pushes makes me want to gag. Blockbuster's candy selection is an insult to the intelligence of movie fans. Starbucks has some decent ideas on what to the public likes to eat, but Blockbuster has no idea.

My question is this: what type of customer is in the market for a high fructose Sugar Snake Candy that has rainbow colors and a double chewy cavity enhancer?

8. The next item to replace is the framed artwork that looks like it fell off a truck in the Bronx, New York. Lets exchange it with some medium to high priced art. Turn it into the living room of the ages that people would love to hang out in.

9. Develop a drive thru. Why not drive thru coffee all day? What the heck else is a person doing all day in a movie rental store? We have not even delved into a coupon purchase loyalty program. Bam.

The revenue streams:

1. Coffee
2. Quality Food
3. DVD's, Games, and Blue Ray
4. Serious Prints on the Walls.
5. Drive up window.
6. Computer Tablets for rental to surf the net. (Of course we will do a credit card deposit for the rental with ID check.)

One way to give back is to donate proceeds into preserving vintage films.

Our bottom line will be to treat the Film Industry as an art source that caters to a higher quality of life. This is one the fundamental damaging viruses that affected Blockbusters Business model in the late 80's, 90's, and 00's: as they grew up, they sold out. As the new Blockbuster Company develops, it will enrich the fabric of Americana and leap into the new era of appreciation.

One final suggestion: I could be in charge of the first store with signing bonus. I'm looking for a job right now.

QuickBooks Enterprise Support

Finding QuickBooks Enterprise Support is Easy!

enterprise rental car

Just because you are having trouble with QuickBooks Enterprise does not mean you need to have trouble finding QuickBooks support.  Unlike even a few years ago, getting support for QuickBooks, like many things in life, has gotten a lot easier with advances in communication, among other things.

ENTERPRISE

QuickBooks Enterprise Remote Support

One of the biggest breakthroughs with regard to getting help with accounting software is the advent of "remote support", whereby the person providing you assistance is actually somewhere else entirely, yet is able to see what is on your computer.  This is typically done through remote desktop sharing software like WebEx, DimDim, FuzeMeeting, TeamViewer, or one of many more.  If you have utilized one of these services before than you will understand how powerful they truly are with regard to get high quality support without waiting.

Intuit QuickBooks Help Desk

Even better than having to deal with the bureaucracy of a corporate help desk is to deal with a smaller firm focused specifically on providing help and support for QuickBooks Enterprise.  These firms embrace their function as providers of support and as such are much more efficient at providing it.  Just make sure you select a firm that has been certified by Intuit, meaning a firm that is a a designated Intuit Solutions Provider.

QuickBooks Enterprise Email Support

If you have a question that is not urgent in nature you could even email QuickBooks Enterprise support, or more accurately one of its surrogates, the Intuit Solutions Provider of your choice.  These smaller outsourced support centers offer much more responsive assistance than that of your traditional corporate bureaucracy and email is very efficient medium of communication for non-time sensitive issues.

Finding the Best QuickBooks Enterprise Support

Just because you do not currently have a relationship with a QuickBooks Enterprise support company does not mean you cannot develop one quickly, efficiently, and cost effectively.  The firm you seek obviously will carry the Intuit Solution Provider designation, which you can confirm with Intuit themselves.

Additionally, you will be better served if you can find a QuickBooks support provider that has been in business for at least 10 years.  This qualification will help weed out some of the lest experienced support providers.  Make sure you pay attention to this tip as it really does help ensure the quality of the individual or firm you end up working with.

If you are looking to build a long-term relationship with a QuickBooks Enterprise support consultant you may want to investigate further and check on the firm's customer list and referrals.  Testimonials can be quite useful in ascertaining how helpful a particular firm really is.

While it may sound surprising, you would be amazed at how many QuickBooks users seeking help and support do not take the time to properly qualify the company they are engaging for support services and help desk related assistance.  Even if it ends up taking a little longer to get the answer to the question you are looking for, you will be able to get answers to future QuickBooks questions much faster as by then you will already have an established QuickBooks Enterprise support vendor.

QuickBooks Enterprise Support

If you are looking for more specific advice on where to get QuickBooks Enterprise Support, Hunt Farnsworth suggests visiting Intuit's website.

Another technique would be to do a search on Google for "quickbooks enterprise consultants". Typically the top 1-2 listings generated by this search will put you in contact with a reputable QuickBooks Enterprise support firm well versed in the problems you are encountering.

Rental Car Roulette - How to Find a Winning Rental Contract

We've all run into a situation where we need a rental car - sometimes renting a vehicle is just part of vacation, but sometimes we look to a rental company for a replacement vehicle while ours is in the shop. You may find that your insurance policy covers a rental car for as long as a month depending on the damage to your own car, but you may not be this lucky. If the cost of a rental car falls to you, it is important to craft your rental agreement wisely in order to get the best price.

Rental Type

RENTAL COUPONS

If you normally get by driving a mid-sized sedan, there is no need to rent a luxury SUV or town car. Similarly, you have no business driving a flashy sports car while your Honda is waiting on a new transmission. The size and brand of you rental should be no more extravagant than your own vehicle - the price of the rental just isn't justified, and your insurance policy may not cover damages to a model that is significantly more expensive than your standard vehicle. You will be best off if you can rent the smallest economy car that will get you through the week.

Rental Term

Depending on the daily base rate for your car, you may save money with a week-long rental over a 4 or 5-day rental period. Additionally, extending the rental period tends to be more expensive than shortening it, so you're better off overestimating the length of time you will need the vehicle. Find out if you get any credit for returning the rental car early; if not, keep driving the rental for the couple of days after your own vehicle is repaired and save yourself the mileage on the vehicle you own!

Rental Company

Comparison shopping is guaranteed to save you money on a rental car. There are so many national and international rental agencies flooding the market that they have to compete to get your business. You can get quotes online from travel sites, or you can book directly through the rental agency website. Each company will have different pricing schedules, different policies when it comes to additional drivers, refueling, and insurance coverage, so ask lots of questions to find a rental car agreement that works best for you.

Discount Deals

When you have narrowed your decision down to two or three rental car companies, do a quick online search for coupons. Often you can find printable coupons that get you free upgrades, or lower rental fees for extended rentals. If your rental is for vacation, travel sites like Expedia may get you a discounted rate if you can book your flight, rental car, and hotel all at once through them as a package deal. Another option is that your insurance company may have an agreement with certain rental agencies - if this is the case, your insurance agent can draft a rental car agreement for you and secure a very low rate.

Blockbuster DVD Rental Plans

Blockbuster has joined the online DVD rental game. Face by the increased competition of rival Netflix, Blockbuster saw their customers and profits going away. So in 2004 Blockbuster formed their own version of online DVD rental. It has grown to over 1.5 million users and has evolved several different plans to meet the needs of all different types of consumers.

enterprise car rental coupons

The first type of online DVD rental offering is called "Blockbuster by Mail." This is purely based on online DVD rental. All the plans offer unlimited DVDs through the mail. Plans start at .99 per month for one DVD at a time, then .99 per month for two DVDs at a time, and lastly .99 for three DVD's at a time. You are not allowed to access stores to rent DVD's on these plans and if you do, you will have to pay independently for in-store rentals.

RENTAL COUPONS

The newest online DVD rental plans are call "Total Access." The name is used to describe the ability for customer to take advantage of Blockbuster's thousands of participating local locations. As a member you are allowed to do in-store exchanges. Plans vary with six different options. You can have one, two, or three DVD's at a time, but the major different in the number of allowed in-store exchanges. Similar to Blockbuster by Mail you are entitled to unlimited DVDs through the mail. The low end of Blockbuster Total Access plan costs 11.99 per month. You will get one DVD at a time with unlimited DVDs through the mail. You are also allowed 2 in-store exchanges per month for free. The most expensive plan costs 34.99 and allows for three DVDs at a time with unlimited through the mail and unlimited in-store exchanges. This is the grand daddy of movie watching.

The competitive advantage for Blockbuster is the thousands of locations throughout the US. This allows for something Netflix could never compete with, in-store exchanges. Now, not all Blockbuster locations participate with in-store exchanges and they do not have to because many locations are franchises. You do have to provide the mailing envelope with your mailed DVD to the store so they can send it back. The movies you do get from the store are subject to time restrictions meaning there is due date to return the movie. You could incur late fees if the in-store movie is not returned by the due date. Furthermore, in-store rentals must be returned to the store. They cannot be mailed back.

As a consumer you need to know your movie watching habits. If you are a movie buff the high plans could suit you best. The average person needs to consider the benefit of having movies delivered to your door and how this could increase your movie watching before choosing a plan.

Online DVD Rental - Blockbuster Vs Netflix

This is often the conflict consumers are left with when determining which way to rent and watch DVDs. Blockbuster is mostly recognized for having thousands of retail stores throughout the country and Netflix is an online DVD rental house. Blockbuster actually has joined the game of online DVD rental and now the two are in fierce competition to gain subscribers to each of their online DVD rental programs. So which one is better? Well, there is no real answer to this but your preferences. Each is covered and the benefits are listed to make the choice easier.

enterprise car rental coupons

Netflix is the oldest online DVD rental service and is the most recognized. Blockbuster is a bit newer and has a lot of the same features as Netflix. Each offers DVDs deliver to your door in one to two days. Shipping is free and there are no late fees. This a monthly charge as a subscription. The movie watching is unlimited with almost all plans. Cost differs on how many DVDs the plan allows at one time.

RENTAL COUPONS

Blockbuster has two advantages. The first is the number of plans offered. There are a total of eleven different plans for consumers to choose from. This makes it customizable to the consumer's movie watching habits. The second unique selling point for Blockbuster is the use of their thousands of locations in their online DVD rental program. Blockbuster offers in-store exchanges of DVDs. This is something Netflix could never offer since the lack of infrastructure.

Netflix has two advantages as well. The first is the selection. They are well above their competition offering over 100,000 titles. Blockbuster has over 80,000 titles, but Netflix takes it the next level in selection. The second is the ability to stream content direct to your computer. Netflix offers over 20,000 different titles ready to be stream any time you want. This is the equivalent of Blockbuster's in-store exchanges. It allows consumers to fill that need for something different than what was received in the mail.

To choose goes beyond these two advantages from each. The decision of how each meets your needs is the prime factor. If watching on programming your computer is not the preferred method of entertainment then in-store exchanges could help you make up your mind. If never having to leave your home for your entertainment then Netflix could meet your needs. Compare each and see what will work best for you.

Online DVD rental has two major competitors, Blockbuster and Netflix. Read about how they are similar and have two advantages in their offerings.

Many IKEA Locations Are Offering Much More Than Furniture

Those who have been following the evolution of IKEA for years know that it has been making strong improvements with the newer stores that have opened around the country. But those who haven't been keeping up are often surprised to find that the location near them has much more than stylish furniture and budget prices - and for many, the surprise is pleasant. If you've heard about how great the retailer is, but haven't explored it for yourself, then take a journey with me to find out what IKEA locations are offering to "wow" their customers.

Of course, the major selling point for IKEA locations around the country is their trendy, yet inexpensive, furniture. Many are amazed when they walk into one of these warehouse-sized stores to find tons of inexpensive options everywhere. It is not uncommon in one of their stores to locate a very nice leather sofa for under 00. And if you're lucky, you will probably find a great armchair to match for even less - that is, if it hasn't already been snatched up by the person who was standing behind you eyeballing it. But many first-time customers are being surprised by more than just the prices and styles when the take a good look around the store. This is because IKEA has stepped into the arena of the superstore with their new features.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL COUPONS

For example, don't be surprised if you walk into one of the newer IKEA stores only to be greeted by the scent of Swedish cuisine. Because it seems the retailer recognized the need for customers to be comfortable in their stores, they added an in-store restaurant serving American and Swedish meals. I've also heard that some locations include a bistro or café inside, and a Swedish Food Market. While I don't suppose it is entirely necessary to include all of this in a furniture store, it does give people a chance to experience the culture of the man who started the company, Ingvar Kamprad, who is from Sweden.

Something else that customers, and especially parents, are raving about is the inclusion of the children's play area in many IKEA locations around the country. The play area is not unlike many that you can find in malls except for one major bonus: it is supervised. This means many parents can take their children to IKEA, drop them off at the play area, shop at their own pace, grab the kids afterward, get a bite to eat then leave. It is the perfect solution for those who don't have a babysitter. And of course, it can help wear those little rugrats out so that when they get home, they'll be full and tired - the perfect formula for early bedtime.

Some other extras IKEA locations include rental vans, a Kids Club with discounts and special events, a free appointment with one of their furniture consultants, and free in-store measuring and designing tools. With all of the extras they're offering, it seems these IKEA locations have learned the art of keeping a customer - and by doing so they, of course, gain extra business. But this isn't a bad thing, because you as the customer reap the benefit - and no one loses in a win-win situation.

Many IKEA Locations Are Offering Much More Than Furniture

enterprise rental car

For those wish to start a limousine rental business here, it would be heartening to note that the area's tourism market is a truly thriving one, which should help prospective limo rental owners to make a good head start in running a successful rental operation, to serve the many needs of tourists, businessmen, and families whenever they need a limo for different types of special occasions.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

Do Some Research First

First, it's important for prospective limo rental owners to do a lot of research into what type of limousines you want to have. This also means that you should begin to check on the various vehicle designs and types, and decide if you prefer having a single standard vehicle, like a Lincoln or a Chrysler, or do you want one that you can modify yourself and create into the vehicle of your choice.

You also need to compare what you want in a vehicle, and to what other companies in your area have for their vehicles as well. In addition, also verify what your potential clients are going to prefer. There is no reason at all to buy a a fleet of vehicles that are not the style that your clients are going to like, as this would not be a good way to succeed in this kind of field.

Verify If You Need To Buy Or Lease Your Vehicles

The next move, is to determine whether if you can afford to buy your vehicles, or if you are going to be forced to lease them for the meantime. From then on, you also need to consider the cost for additional mileage that can be added on as part of the lease, as this could be a very real expense that will likely incur a lot of expense in the long run.

You also need to budget ahead of time when you are comparing figures, in order to make the best decision that you can afford while still ensuring that you keep your business profitable, and be able to find out exactly what hidden costs are included in the lease before you actually sign the lease agreement.

Verify What Licenses And Requirements Are Needed

You also need to spend some time following up on the various requirements needed to operate your business. Such as the license and permits, and these may differ with each town or city. You should know all of this information before you actually purchase or lease the limousines in case you encounter some problems in the approval process, which could postpone or possibly derail your limousine rental service. .

Find Good, Knowledgeable Staff

Once you have completed all the licensing requirements, as well as acquired the types of vehicles to use, it's now time to decide on looking for your drivers, and training them. As you want to make sure that your staff should be well-trained and have the appropriate licenses to legally drive the vehicles, you also need to verify the previous driving records of your personnel, as you do not want to hire someone who has a previous bad habit of driving, to work for your limousine rental service.

Determine Your Operating Expenses

Once you've already obtained the licenses, and trained your staffers, your final task is to determine what your operating expenses are going to include. Normally, this will include vehicle insurance, taxes, oil, gas, staff wages and other indirect expenses. With a lot good planning and research, you should be able to avoid the pitfalls of running this business, and ensure a successful operation.

Enterprise Software, Integration Issues and New Trends

Océ, a leading provider of digital document management technology and services, published it's financial figures yesterday over the second quarter of 2006.

enterprise car rental coupons

The CFO of Océ commented to Betten Beursmedia (a financial information company) about the pending decision in the area of Enterprise software (Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP). At the moment, Océ and the company Imagistics that has been acquired last year, both use a different ERP solution. The decision to take is about selecting a single solution (provider).

ENTERPRISE

Océ itself uses SAP in North America. In Europe it is in process of converting JDE to SAP. Imagistics, however is using Oracle.

Oracle and SAP have a different background in Enterprise Software. The origin of SAP is to build applications especially in the area of ERP. Oracle is traditionally a database provider, but has recently acquired SIEBEL and Peoplesoft which are companies that provide software for CRM (Siebel) and HRM or ERP (Peoplesoft). Oracle still needs to integrate these solutions.

It is not easy to tell which company is leading this battle, but both companies are aware that the real challenge lies in connecting to another trend, which is providing software services on demand. Internet technology like web services have already changed and will change even more change the settings in the software market.

In the old setting, a provider offered an application which was to support the functionality of the business process. The main issue with this was the fact that ERP systems where not the only one in town. A company need different functionality for different purposes and these solutions were offered by different providers; a CRM Package for client management, ERP for production and administration, but in the "middle" ...

In the middle there was nothing, really. Which led to the invention of middleware - software that was to connect different applications.

Both Oracle and SAP entered this market too. SAP with Netweaver and Oracle with Fusion. But there is still a gap from the middleware solutions to real Web Services.

And this is the clue. Management of Océ will know this, but the investment market is probably not up to date yet with these developments and demands (Océ) for a traditional solution to choose one of the two main providers.

Tips To Rent A Car The Smartest Way

Sometimes when you stand at the rental car company counter when you need to rent a car you may feel a little bit confused with the options given by the agent, Should you say no to all of them? or yes? in this article you can find some tips to help you take the best decision.

enterprise rental car

The first and most important action you have to take is look around on internet. Most of the car rental companies have a website where you can see what rates, terms and conditions, restrictions, size of cars they have and a lot more information you can review at your own pace in the comfort of your home or office before being in front of the agent who will try to sell you services or car sizes you really won't need.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

Do the math first, if you find an unbelievably low rate, you may find that is not really that low when everything is said and done, you need to clarify what taxes, surcharges or other fees you'll expected to pay and lookout for extras like airport fees you may be asked to pay.

Keep your eyes open and hunt for deals. Car rental companies always offer weekend or weekday special rates, keep looking for those promotions and try to find discount or promotional codes.

You really need a full size car? if not, go economy or compact. This kind of vehicles are the most popular, companies run out of economy models very often, in this case you may have a free upgrade to a full size car, but if not you will get your car anyway, it worths to try.

See if there are restrictions about where you can take your car and how may miles are included, some companies offer unlimited mileage but you can't take the car out of the state for example, if you do you that you may have to pay extras, increasing your final cost.

Don't prepay for gas, fill the tank yourself, because with that kind of deals you get a higher price.

Get the minimum insurance possible, the company will offer you a lot of extra insurance you rarely will need, you can use your credit card protection, major credit cards offer CDW for renting a car, also your regular car insurance may cover the rented one too, check your insurance coverage first.

Finally, be always on time. Car rental companies charge you a lot if you return the car only a few hours later, you can pay what you pay for the whole day even if you return it 30 minutes later.

Tips on Getting an Insurance Replacement Car Rental

Many drivers don't think about rental car insurance when they purchase automobile insurance. Often it takes an accident and a call to their insurance company for some drivers to find out what type of coverage they actually have. When needing an insurance replacement car rental, most drivers assume that their personal auto policy automatically covers the cost of them renting a temporary replacement car.

enterprise rental car

Always remember though, that this is an optional coverage. Rental car reimbursement coverage must be specifically requested and purchased when you buy your automobile insurance policy.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL

Rental reimbursement is offered through almost every auto insurance company. You will pay more for this option in your premium, but the cost of it is minimal in comparison to the cost of what renting a car would be for the time that your vehicle is under repair. The cost of rental reimbursement insurance will generally add an extra dollar or two to your auto insurance premium.

If you decide to book a rental car for an insurance replacement rental, make sure that you have all of the information you need. You will usually be asked the name of your insurance company, your adjustors' name and phone number, the repair facility name and number and your claim number.

You will need to know whether you are paying for the rental or insurance company is paying for the rental - rates are lower for insurance companies that have contracted an agreement with the
rental car company. Make sure you know whether the cost of the rental will be directly billed to the insurance company or if you are paying the rental costs upfront and then will be reimbursed.

Many car rental companies have special insurance replacement rental rates, only with certain insurance companies. Check with your insurer for their preferred partners. Since there are many types of policies and coverage, make sure to ask the adjuster handling your claim to confirm the maximum daily amount and the maximum total amount they will pay for your car rental. You are responsible for any charges over and above the maximum allowance approved by your insurance company.

The Future of Online Movie Rental

Since 1999, movie fans have had the luxury of selecting movies for viewing from the comfort of their home computer and then receiving them at their door through the mail.
Online movie rental services allow users a huge selection and affordable prices as well as convenience. Perhaps the only drawback to these services has been the wait between returning movies and receiving the next ones in the queue.

enterprise car rental coupons

It appears that those movie fans who prefer more immediate gratification may soon see the method of movie delivery begin shifting in their favor. Netflix announced early in 2007 on their website that they were beginning to phase in electronic delivery of movies to their subscribers. Switching service over to internet delivery exclusively will take a number of years as the online movie rental service has over 85,000 titles to its credit and the readiness of many consumers and the film industry is still a step behind. However, some current subscribers began seeing 1,000 titles available for immediate viewing in January 2007 with additional subscribers having the service added each week through the remainder of 2007.

RENTAL COUPONS

In its infancy, the new Netflix "Watch Now" feature allows viewing of movies on personal computers/laptops that have a high speed connection and a Microsoft Windows operating system. However, the company reports that the future goal is to make their movies available on all internet connected screens; for instance on cell phones, iPods and computers with Apple OS.

The electronic delivery offered by Netflix offers some advantages over many download services as it is a real-time playback technology and allows viewers to begin viewing films as they are received versus waiting for the download to occur. Although meeting the demand for greater immediacy is a primary advantage to the Netflix "Watch Now" option, some convenience features will be welcomed by subscribers as well. After a 60 second browser applet installation, subscribers will even be able to pause and move forward within films using a simple position bar, giving viewers greater control.

Current subscribers to the Netflix online movie rental service have access to view up to 48 hours of films per month on the internet streaming service based on the plan in which they participate; the more films per month included in their plan, the more streamed movies they will be able to view. There is no additional charge for viewing streamed movies versus those delivered through the traditional mail method.

Obviously, this news offers current Netflix customers a great new option for getting movies delivered into their home. For those who aren't current customers it certainly demonstrates that the future of online movie rental is firmly headed in the direction of electronic delivery.

Selecting the Right Advertising Media to Find Your Ideal Prospect

Dear Business-Builder,

OK ... so you've got a product on your hands. Maybe it's your product. Or, maybe you're a copywriter and it's your client's product.

ENTERPRISE RENTAL COUPONS

The question is, where do you find the prospects that are most ready, willing and able to become your customers?

That's the question I was asked recently. Well, actually, the question was a bit more specific:

"I have a new client selling jewelry items (ear rings, chains, broaches) targeted at those who feel patriotic about their country - and wish to display their pride on their clothing and body.

"We are discussing advertising in The National Enquirer-type of publication. Danbury and Franklin mint are consistent in there with products in similar price points.

"Where would I find mailing lists targeted at those who buy jewelry items at the 0 price point?

"What about lists of buyers who are patriotic - where would I find such a list?"

Soon as I read that question, I realized I've been woefully remiss in writing articles about advertising media. Should you begin with TV? Radio? A Web campaign? Print ads in newspapers or magazines? Direct mail?

I mean - it's kind of an important question when you think about it. After all - the medium you'll be using not only determines the cost of your promotion; it also is a major influence on the approach you're going to take in your sales copy!

So today, we're going to remedy that - with a basic, plain-English guide to selecting the advertising media that will give your promotions the greatest likelihood of success.

Or, alternatively titled ...

MEDIA SELECTION 101

Right off the bat, it helps to understand three all-important facts of life about selecting the optimal medium for your promotion ...

FACT #1: There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch. If you plan to rent a direct mail list, place an ad in a newspaper or magazine, buy time on TV or radio, plaster your business all over a billboard - or even buy space on the back of a matchbook - you might as well get used to it: You're going to have to unlimber your checkbook.

Think you can dodge the media cost bullet by building your business on the Internet? ... Maybe with affiliate programs, joint venture or per-inquiry (PI) deals?

Good luck! These programs are important, but your affiliates and joint venture partners - not you - get to decide if and when your ads run and by extension, if and when you'll become a success.

To produce the big numbers of new customers you're looking for, you'll need to seize control of your own fortunes. And that means renting e-mail lists, buying banners on websites, signing on for pay-per-click campaigns -- and unless you personally have the time and knowledge required, paying someone else to make sure the search engines can find your site.

FACT #2: Some Advertising Media Cost More Than Others. The rates a particular medium charges you are generally based on four things ...

A. The number of people who will see your message: The number of people who subscribe, read, view or listen to a particular medium is often referred to as "impressions" or "eyeballs" - and the more eyeballs you get, the more you pay.

The cost of a medium divided by eyeballs tells you how much you're paying to deliver your sales message to one prospect. Multiply that number times one thousand and you get that medium's "cost per thousand" or "CPM." CPM is the number that's usually used to compare the cost of various media.

A 30-second television spot in a local market might cost you as little as /M. A red-hot direct mail list could cost you 0/M or more.

B. The size of your ad: In addition to the number of eyeballs you get, you also pay for how much time or space your ad will consume. Full-page ads cost more than little ones; 30-second commercials cost less than 30-minute infomercials. Even in bulk mailings, basic postage rates allow you up to three ounces of material. If you want to send more, you'll have to pay more.

C. The type of people who will see your message: As a general rule ...

Media that deliver your ad to the gray masses are the cheapest on a CPM basis: Billboards, general-interest newspapers and tabloids, local TV and radio channels, for example ...

Media that deliver your ad to better-defined audiences cost a little more: Special interest magazines, cable channels and websites, for example ...

And the media that put your sales message only in front of people who are most highly qualified to buy your product charge out the wazzoo: Highly selected direct mail and e-mail lists of folks who have bought your type of product through this kind of medium in the recent past are at the top of the media cost pecking order (and usually, well-worth it!).

FACT #3: Some Advertising Media Produce Higher Response Rates Than Others. If you ever had the opportunity to run the exact same sales copy on every medium available, you'd probably find that the percentage of folks who respond to your ad will be up to 100 times greater in some media than in others.

Same ad, same copy, same offer - massive response differential.

Why?

Well, for one thing, there's the competition. If your sales message is just one in a big newspaper or magazine or clustered with others on TV or radio, not all readers will see or hear you - and therefore, the media will probably cost you less.

On the other hand, if your sales message is delivered all by itself (as in direct mail or e-mail blasts), your response rate could be up to 100 times higher - and the media cost will also be higher.

But there's another, more crucial reason why the response rates produced by some advertising media are so much higher than others ...

THE SELECTIVITY FACTOR

Media that produce the greatest response rates are invariably those that deliver your ad to your most qualified prospects. Put simply, they allow you to select your audience using one of three general criteria ...

1. Geographic Selection: Some media - billboards, general-interest newspapers and tabloids and local TV and radio stations, for example - can't tell you much about who'll see or hear your ad.

Sure -- they've done polls, so they can also give you a good idea of the average and/or median age and income level of their readers - and what percent are men vs. women. But that's pretty much it.

Beyond that, all they can really tell you for sure is the geographic area in which your ad will be seen -- a particular neighborhood ... Zip code ... SCF (the first three digits of your Zip code) ... city ... metro area ... county ... state ... region ... or nation, for example.

By their very nature, they can't offer you the choice to advertise only to men or women or folks above a particular income level.

On the other hand, these media are extremely cheap. So, if just about everyone in a particular area is a prospect for your product, these geographically defined media can actually be highly cost-effective.

But ...

If only women buy your product, you could be wasting up to half of your advertising dollar - effectively doubling your media costs ...

If only women over 50 are prospects, you could be quadrupling your media costs ...

If only women over 50 with osteoporosis are prospects, you could be multiplying your media costs by a factor of ten ...

And if your best prospect is a woman over 50 with osteoporosis who would try an alternative treatment, and can afford your product, you could be wasting 99% or more of every ad dollar.

2. Demographic Selection: Because they exclude obvious non-prospects, advertising media that deliver consumers based on their sex, sexual orientation, race or ethnic group, age, education, profession, income level, home ownership, etc. - tend to produce substantially higher response rates.

Media that allow you to focus exclusively on the appropriate demographic for your product include ...

Special-interest magazines: Playboy, Maxim and Popular Mechanics deliver mostly men. Cosmo, Glamour and Woman's Day give you the ladies. Seventeen gives you young girls, Modern Maturity gives you us old fogies and Black Enterprise gives you Afro-American professionals. Prevention gives you health nuts ... Guns & Ammo gives you gun nuts ... Sports Illustrated gives you sports nuts ... ad infinitum.

Special-interest cable channels: Lifetime gives you women ... Discovery Health gives you health nuts ... The History Channel and History International give you history nuts ... Speed Channel gives you car nuts ... etc.

Special-interest web sites: With millions of sites out there, it's a deadlock cinch that you'll find a site that delivers your prime demographic - and then place your banners on that site.

Plus, just about every special-interest magazine you can name has a website and most will allow you to place banners on their sites for a fee.

Direct mail and e-mail lists: Take a look in the Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS) for mail lists, and you'll see three kinds of lists:

1) Compiled lists - lists of names and addresses that were compiled from public records. Typical compiled lists include lists of addresses without names attached ("occupant lists"), lists of folks with drivers' licenses, homeowners, plus lists of professionals and so forth.

2) Inquiry lists - folks who have asked for more information in response to a lead-producing ad, but who have not made a purchase.

3) Buyer lists - folks who have actually purchased a product (or donated money) as the direct result of a promotion sent to them by mail. Naturally, these include the lists of people who subscribe to all the specialty magazines named above.

Depending on your product, all of these lists might give you the ability to ensure that your message is going to folks who satisfy your demographic criteria - but because buyer lists contain the names of folks who have actually spent money through the mail, they're by far the most responsive of the three.

3. Psychographic Selection: The greatest response rates you'll find - by a long shot - are produced by media that allow you to select your prospects psychographically.

Psychographic selection allows you to find prospects on the basis of their PROVEN interests, beliefs, fears and desires.

"Proven" is the operative word, here. Psychographic media - mostly mailing lists and e-mail lists (and the co-ops, ride-alongs and insert programs that go to those lists) -- deliver folks who have actually purchased a product like yours through a medium like the one you'll be using!

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Looking back at the question at the beginning of this article, my friend was thinking about 1) Advertising his patriotic jewelry in National Enquirer because Franklin Mint does, and ... 2) Mailing to lists of folks who previously bought jewelry items for around his 0 price point.

To me at least, either would be a mistake. Why? Because it totally leaves the prospects' dominant emotions out of the equation.

Since 99% of all purchases we make every day are made to satisfy an emotional need, that's like showing up at a gunfight and leaving 99% of your bullets in the glove compartment.

Instead, I'd want my promo going to folks who are, first and foremost, passionate about their love of country - so passionate, they'd love nothing better than to express that patriotism in the jewelry they wear.

My first question would be, "Where are the lists of folks who are already buying other kinds of patriotic jewelry at or around this price point?" In short, I'd look at direct competitors and try to rent their mailing lists.

My second question would be, "Where can I find people who have purchased non-jewelry patriotic items and who have paid about 0 per purchase?" I'd scan for direct mail and e-lists of people who've spent 0 to buy American flags, patriotic license plates, red-white-and-blue clothing, for example.

My third question would be, "Where can I find people who have such a compelling love of country that they'd probably jump at the chance to wear patriotic jewelry?" I'd look at magazines, websites, and mailing lists that deliver the most politically active folks out there: Members of political action committees and lobbying groups like the National Rifle Association ... Republican and Democrat fat cat donors ... members of veterans' organizations ... and so on.

Finally, after I've fully explored all of these media, my fourth question would be, "Where can I find general-interest media that's so cheap, I'll still make money even if my response rate is miniscule?" And that's where I'd look at print ads in huge circulation tabloids and TV.

Then, I'd sit down and do a little math:

"Hmmm ... my patriotic lapel pin costs me . I sell it for . That gives me an margin.

If my mail cost is 0 per thousand pieces mailed, I'll need to sell 6.25 pins for every thousand pieces mailed to break even.

That's a response rate of about .63%: About six-tenths of one percent.

Doable? Maybe. But that might restrict me to using only the most qualified lists out there. I'd better hedge my bets some.

For one thing, I could add a nice bump to my offer. Maybe a beautiful broach for my prospect's spouse for, say, an additional (gross profit: ).

That should get my average margin per sale up to around 0. At that rate, my break-even response rate drops to .38%. Now, we're talking!

------------------------

Well, this media question is a pretty big one - and we've only scratched the surface. True -- it's a scratch that would have gotten my butt whupped if I'd left it on my Mom's piano bench.

But it's still only a scratch. There's a lot more to consider - but I'll have to tackle the next step another time.
