Tips to Pick the Best Rental Car For Your Needs

There are several things to consider when you decide to book a rental car not the least of which is - what do you want to do with it when you've signed the contract and are ready to drive away?

If you are on your own and have little luggage then it's perhaps not important to you to think about the size of the car but what about the power of the engine? Because as we all know this can make a difference to your enjoyment of the actual car.

Let's take for example a trip to a ski resort, if you can ski, you are likely to be driving up quite steep inclines to get to the resort, even on your own, do you want to do that in a 1100cc car?

So there are a couple of things to think about when you decide to rent a car, size and engine power.

There are many things to consider when you're trying to decide what size car to hire, most people make the mistake of going for the cheapest option which will hold their party, this can lead to problems so let's look at what you need to consider.

How many people are you going to need to carry? How much luggage does each person have? How far are you intending to travel in the rental car? How tall is the driver and any passengers sitting in the back? Does anyone in the party have a physical disability?

Starting with 1, you need to think about comfort, if you're all only going to be in the car for 10 minutes at the start and end of the trip then comfort may not need to be a consideration. If on the other hand you're going to be spending a couple of hours a day in the car then you need to think about comfort.

Moving on to 2, if everyone has large cases and/or golf clubs, ski's etc then you need to think about how much room you need to accomodate all the people AND their luggage.

Looking at number 3, this is one of the things that people often overlook, a small (and therefore cheaper) car may be fine if you're only going to and from the hotel to the beach a mile away. But what if you want to explore the surrounding countryside and travel an hour or more there and back? It you're going to be doing that sort of traveling then probably you need a larger car in which all passengers can travel in relative comfort.

Number 4 is another often overlooked issue as is the height of passengers traveling in the back. It's no good getting a small car to save money only to find that you can't fit! My husband and son-in-law both have this problem and you'd be surprised how often it occurs, especially if they want a convertible, OK with the top down but if it rains...

Finally we come to number 5, we're not talking wheel chairs here, we're talking about bad backs, arthritic knees and anything else that may make it difficult for someone to get into and out of car. This is something to think about when you're trying to decide between a 2 door and 4 door rental car.

Any and all of these things will also make a difference to the power of the car you need, 4 hefty rugby players along with their luggage are going to strain a small car that only carries 2 young women who are traveling lite! An 1100cc car may do for the girls but - would the guys be as happy? I doubt it!

Renting the cheapest smallest car to save money may seem like a good idea but it can and often does spoil what otherwise would be a fantastic trip, often leaving people with no alternative but to rent a bigger more powerful car locally at enormous expense.

So think carefully and remember - cheaper is not always better!
